Why Mexico’s Weather is Ideal for ADV Riding Year-Round
One of the most overlooked yet vital ingredients for a great adventure motorcycle ride is weather. And when it comes to ADV riding, Mexico delivers some of the best conditions in the world. With its immense geographical diversity and range of elevations, Mexico offers a climate that makes riding not only possible, but enjoyable nearly every day of the year.
Sure, like any country, Mexico has its seasonal considerations. In the far north, particularly in states like Chihuahua or Sonora, winter can bring chilly weather and the occasional snow in December through February—especially at elevation. And in the southern lowlands, particularly near the coasts or jungle zones, April to mid-June can crank up the heat and humidity before the rains arrive to cool things down.
But here’s the good news: the vast majority of Mexico offers great riding weather all year long.
RideMex routes have been designed with this in mind. Most of our tracks stay up in the mountainous regions of the Sierra Madre ranges—where elevations hover between 1,000 to 2,500 meters (3,500 and 8,000 feet). That means cooler temperatures in the hotter months and milder conditions in the winter. Even when the tropical lowlands are sweltering, the high mountain pine forests remain comfortable, fresh, and ideal for long days in the saddle.
In many regions, you’ll wake to crisp mornings, ride through pleasantly warm afternoons, and finish the day without having to peel your gear off due to sweat or shiver. ADV riders can clock full days without the fatigue that comes from fighting weather extremes.
Winter in the North = Prime Riding Season in Mexico
Here’s the part that excites a lot of northern ADV riders: when it’s the worst time of year to ride in the U.S., Canada, and Europe—it’s the best time of year to ride in Mexico.
While bikes are parked in snow-covered garages and cabin fever kicks in, Mexico is wide open with perfect ADV riding conditions. November through March is arguably the best five-month stretch in the entire year to ride here. November is a standout month—the summer rains have just ended, the trails are dry, and the countryside is still lush and green. December and January are mild, comfortable, and relatively green. February and March are stand-out months as well, with very pleasant weather and a more dry, desert-like appearance to much of the landscape.
During this time, it almost never rains. Mexico’s dry season lives up to its name—it’s truly dry. This consistency makes trip-planning easy and riding worry-free.
Personally, I ride in mesh with full armor year-round, and I rarely need to carry a jacket. The weather is that good all the time.
So while northern riders are grounded by ice and cold, RideMex is in full swing, guiding tours and offering fresh tracks through some of the most beautiful and remote terrain on the continent.
Tips for Weather-Savvy Riding in Mexico:
-
In the far north during December–February, bring layers for the occasional cold day.
-
In April–June, aim high—mountain routes are cooler, scenic, and breezy.
-
During summer and early fall (rainy season), expect some afternoon rains—but mornings and early afternoons are usually dry.
-
From November to March, expect near-perfect conditions across most of Mexico.
With thoughtful route design and seasonal awareness, Mexico becomes one of the most rideable and enjoyable countries in the world for ADV riders—twelve months a year. It’s not just the terrain, the culture, or the freedom of the open road—it’s the weather that seals the deal.
